It’s only the “first” of many sewing mistakes
I’ve made in my life.

In the previous story, I spoke of my Dad who is an amazing carpenter. He made a sewing machine table for my mother when they first were married. The drawers were perfectly designed for threads, notions and tools. You can see in some of these photos how each item had its place.

Handmade sewing machine table

Beautifully designed drawers for the perfect fitting of notions.

This unique table is also special in the sewing machine lifting mechanism. The table top flips up and the machine rests in line with a fitted piece of wood. The table top is totally set-in with the machine.
My Mom cherishes this table so much. Having beautiful furniture in your creative space always acts as an inspiration to do your hobby. When your sewing area is designed to your liking, you feel complete in your own space.
On one unfortunate day, my parent’s home was broken into. The sewing machine table was taken along with many other valuables. It was devastating to imagine that someone would take so many personal items in which those strangers didn’t know the meaning behind.
When you’ve made something yourself, the value placed on that item can’t be measured monetarily. Especially, when you’ve made it for someone else. The item is cherished by both the giver and the receiver.
So, for sure, my parents felt an emptiness from loosing this personal sewing machine table. Not to mention a loss of security.
…. then one day as my Dad was driving around town, he noticed someone was selling some items on the side of the street. He glanced over and there was the table!
He immediately stopped and told the person it was his table and he made it. The person was shocked. My Dad said he could either call the police or the stranger could give him the table. Of course, the person adhered to the order and gave him the table.
To this day, we aren’t certain if that was the person who broke in. It could have been someone who worked with the people who broke in. Who knows!
What’s interesting to me is that my Dad only cared about having the table. He didn’t force the person to tell him who had done this awful act or try and get any other items back. To me, this really places the value on the item which was the most important to him and my mother.
My Mom still has her sewing machine table and I’m so happy she got it back. I loved using it growing up.
It’s a beautiful table, isn’t it?! Give a simple “Yes” comment if you agree.
